 As the population demographics of the United States continue to change, therapists will encounter more and more of a diverse range of clients, each of whom has a different set of expectations about therapy. By the year 2020, demographers predict that one third of the population of the United States will be compromised of people of color, which means that both clients of color and therapists of color will bring to therapy a range of assumptions and values about the definitions of self, family, happiness, health, etc. As a result, it is important for therapists to develop skills and sensitivities to their work, and be able to adjust both their own approach and treatment interventions to the needs of their clients.

In this section, dimensions of culture such as class, age, gender, sexual orientation, and race as well as diversity of emotional expressiveness will be explored for their impact on the therapeutic relationship. Particularly highlighted is the necessity for therapists to learn how to manage their own countertransference in light of their relationship to the dominant culture and the impact of the power relationship in therapy.

Finally, the cultural values among different groups and the therapeutic impact of those cultures is discussed.

  5. Analyze the therapeutic implications when working with Iranian-American, Jewish-American, and Native-American clients.
