Dual Relationships Online Text-based Home Course (1 CE)

The issue of dual relationships is one of the most controversial considerations in psychotherapy.

Dual relationships can become a problem in therapy for the main ethical priority that therapists act in the best interest of the client: a dual relationship risks this commitment to putting the client first. However, there are circumstances in which therapists acting in a dual role (e.g., substance-abuse counselor and AA companion, child and family therapist, forensic therapist) do serve the client, and situations in which a dual role cannot be avoided and so must be explicitly negotiated with a client on an ongoing basis (individual and group therapist in a small town where there are few LGBT resources, school and in-home therapist among poor clients). An in-depth understanding of this issue is vital to protecting your license. This course includes a review of current ethical standards and legal issues involved.
